William Gillette’s Castle is a Fortress & Not a Castle

A balcony on William Gillette’s Castle is intricately designed with local field stone. Local Connecticut farmers thought William Gillette was nuts for purchasing local field stone from them to build his castle fortress. They would have given him the stuff for free. Little did they know the castle fortress would later become a state park and a major tourist attraction.
